business man skills hard work conceptQ.  I have worked for several years as an automobile repair technician. I know this field well and I enjoy my work. I’m thinking about opening my own business. Do you have any words of caution?

A.  We often advise people not to open a bakery because you love baking cakes. If you love baking, get a job as a baker. The minute you open a bakery, you’ll discover that there is a lot more to running such a business than baking cakes. You’ll have to wait on customers, keep the books, order inventory and sweep the floors.

They don’t always have the training  in areas like marketing, HR and accounting. How can they quantify the value of their time and figure out the best way to spend it?

shutterstock 157125392 1Q.  It’s a natural desire to be loyal to your very first employees. But someone who could run your accounting department as a $1 million business may not be suited to run it as a $25 million business. How can you retain those people — and their important institutional knowledge — when you reach a point that you need to put in additional layers of management?

A. This is a difficult issue. It can be exacerbated if you have done what so many entrepreneurs do, which is to hire friends and family. We strongly suggest that if business owners are going to hire friends and family, they do it with their eyes open. Recognize that the time may come when the person has to be layered or worse yet, replaced.

cut costsQ.  I’ve got a terrible problem. My business with 25 employees is underwater. I can’t pay all of the bills. We have plenty of revenue, but things have gotten away from me. I’m overwhelmed and don’t know what to do next. What’s your advice?

A.  It sounds like you are in a tough spot. You’ll likely have to make some difficult decisions and will need to take decisive action to save your business. We’ll give you some general thoughts on how to address your most pressing needs. However, you may be well advised to reach out to someone with experience in this area for help.

business man timeIf you have a flat on your way home, how long will it take you to change the tire - perhaps twenty or thirty minutes - longer if you have to wait for AAA? How long does it take a pit crew to change a tire at Richmond International Raceway - single digit seconds? That's a 99 percent cycle time reduction. The opportunities for significant improvements in cycle times are by no means restricted to the speedway. Virtually all businesses are good candidates to benefit from this exercise.

sustainable businessIt's become very fashionable and trendy to go "green." There is considerable social pressure to be "green." People spend money to conform. We recycle even though it costs time and there is no economic return to us. People invest in solar panels even though the payback is so long that it can't conceivably be cost effective. Being "green" may be expensive, but there's certainly a social, if not a moral imperative, so we pay the price.

“Doug and Polly, I want to thank both of you! The past few months have been enlightening and overwhelming all at the same time. Your guidance, direction, wealth of knowledge, and wisdom have exceeded all my expectations. No words could ever completely describe just how amazing of a “dynamic duo” you two really are!”

Dawn Beninghove, RN, CCM, CRP, PNChief Executive Officer / Companion Extraordinaire Nursing Network, Inc.

“Doug White took on an unfocused operation (in the financial services sector) and created an efficient, centralized system dedicated to excellence. He did this not by driving change from the top down, but by helping the entire team see how their part of the process could be improved. Doug then mentored us toward effecting the changes ourselves. He taught us all how to bring our “A game,” and how to take ownership and pride in what we do.”

Donna LevinVice President of Operations / care.com

"I have had the privilege of working with Polly White for several years on a variety of projects. She consistently provides clear direction on how to resolve a wide range of employment-related issues. I look forward to my continued relationship with Polly."

I have known Polly for more than ten years. As an HR Manager, I have utilized Polly’s training expertise at my former company and with my current company. Polly exceled at assessing the needs of our management teams and tailoring training programs that resulted in visible positive change. I also know I can count on Polly as a resource on any HR topic or bounce ideas off of her when I need a second opinion. Polly has been a mentor to me and I have always appreciated her willingness to listen and offer valuable advice and expertise.
